New Orleans Duals – RESULTS


The Loras College wrestling team made the trek to New Orleans, Louisiana over the weekend for a trio of dual meets at Jesuit High School as part of the Gator Duals. The event included competition against Waynesburg, Delaware Valley, and Morningside.


The first match of the morning was against Waynesburg University (PA) Yellow Jackets. The teams alternated wins over the first four matches of the day, with the Duhawks earning wins from Matt Holmes and Joe Wood. Holmes (133#) pinned his opponents in just 67 seconds, while Wood (149#) won a 9-7 decision. Loras' third and final win of the dual came at 197 pounds where Ryan Ward prevailed 5-3.


Waynesburg used three decisions, a major decision, a technical fall, and two pins to eclipse the Duhawks in the scoring column.


Dual number two of the day was against Delaware Valley College (PA). The Duhawks won four matches against the Aggies, including the second of the day for both Matt Holmes and Joe Wood. Holmes defeated #10 Eric McCann, 4-3, to earn Loras' first win of the dual. Joe Wood then won Loras' second match, a major decision, 15-2. Tom Gross (165#) cracked the win column with a 10-6 decision and Josh Kirkland (184#) earned a late pin in his match to help the Duhawks to 16 team points. The Aggies countered with 25 of their own, including two pins, to earn the win.


The final matchup of the day was with the NAIA Morningside Mustangs (Sioux City, Iowa). Pat Pfantz put the Duhawks in the win column right away with an overtime win, 4-2. After Holmes and Wood sandwiched wins around a Sean Raddatz 5-3 loss, Loras had won three of the first four matches.


Tom Gross won another close match, 6-5 over his opponent at 165, to close Loras' day in the win column.


The Duhawks are now off for the holidays until their January 5throad matchup with the Augustana Vikings in Rock Island, Illinois.


The next home event for the Duhawks is the IIAC dual with the Simpson Storm in the Graber Sports Center on January 18. That event is the first of five home events for the Duhawks over the final month of the season.
