The Loras College football team dropped their third Iowa Conference game of 2009 in the Rock Bowl on Saturday, 41-17 to the nationally ranked Central College Dutch. The Duhawks looked strong at points, but continued to turn the ball over with three in Saturday's game, which directly led to 21 Central points.
For the Dutch, the quarterback duo of Nate Snead and Zack Bandow combined to go 12-for-18 in the passing game, each going 6-for-9 and each passing for two touchdowns. Snead added team high 16 carries for 92 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. David Zachary, the league's leading rusher, was mostly neutralized until a 28 yard scamper in the third quarter. Zachary finished with 73 yards on the ground for the visitors. Jeremy Snead was the go-to receiver for the quartback duo, catching six passes for 88 yards and two scores.
On Loras' side of the ball, the story was quarterback Vaughn Gesing, who posted another strong performance in the passing game after sitting out for one game with an injury to his non-throwing elbow. On Saturday, the sophomore from Waukon, Iowa went 31-of-49 for 282 yards. His 31 completions set Loras' single game mark and his 49 attempts tied his record number posted earlier this season against Monmouth. Gesing was hurt by four sacks, two interceptions, and a couple of drops by the Duhawks in the loss.
Beau Evans ran for 57 yards, including a big 39 yard dash towards the goal line in the third quarter that set up Gavin Kaiser's sixth rushing touchdown of the year. Johnny Jackson also reached the end zone for the first time in his solid freshman season, reaching paydirt from 12 yards out in the fourth quarter.
Part of Gesing's record setting day was the fact that he completed passes to 12 different Duhawks. Among the leaders in that category were Kaiser with seven (77 yards) and Walt Labuz with five (43 yards). Each of the three running back, Jackson, Evans, and Brandon Decker were a part of that receiving core as well. Brandon Pattison also appeared on the score sheet for the first time in his freshman season with two catches for 35 yards, including a big 28 yard chunk on his first catch of the year.
Kile Beaver posted a season high 12 tackles for the Duhawks defense, which didn't wasn't able to force any takeaways this week.
