Coe 57, Loras 55

The Loras College women's basketball team opened Iowa Conference play against defending co-champion and Coe College. A year ago, the Duhawks went 1-2 against the Kohawks, losing by a bunch in the first meeting before winning the home contest by one point. In the IIAC tournament, Loras lost in Cedar Rapids by three points. The familiar foes took to the floor in Cedar Rapids again on Wednesday night.

The first half saw the teams combine for 19 field goals and 24 turnovers. Katie Langmeier and Katie Wheeler each scored close range baskets at the end of the half to turn a five point Kohawks lead into a one point going into the half. The Kohawks were held scoreless over the final four minutes of the first half.

Three minutes into the second half, the Duhawks took a lead on a Lindsey LaBadie three pointer. Loras held that slim lead until the nine minute mark when Kayla Waskow made a layup and a follow-up free throw after a foul.

Four ties and two lead changes later, the teams were tied at 55-55 after Brit Kent split her free throws. On the final offensive possession for Coe, Kelsey Jipp went to the free throw line after a foul by Melissa Herrmann. Jipp converted both.

Loras used the final six seconds to setup Brit Kent for a quick-release three pointer from the right wing – but the effort glanced off the rim to give the Kohawks their first IIAC win and the Duhawks their first IIAC loss.

Katie Wheeler and Kelly Rogowski led the Duhawks with 10 points each. Brit Kent had nine and Katie Langmeier and Lindsey LaBadie had eight. Herrmann and Langmeier tied for the team lead with eight rebounds – Wheeler and Kent each had seven.

The teams tied in points in the paint with 26 each and point off turnovers with 13. The Duhawks did hold a significant advantage in second chance points, 21-9.

Loras returns to the AWC on Saturday with a 2:00 PM tipoff with Luther College (1-4, 0-1).
