The Loras College men's soccer team put themselves in position for their fourth consecutive Iowa Conference championship on Wednesday with a late night victory over the University of Dubuque in the Rock Bowl, 2-1.

A scoreless opening 45 minutes saw the home team lead in shots, 5-3, but the only three that went on frame were saved by University of Dubuque goalkeeper Nick Kasper. Ten minutes into the second half Nick Rizzo gave the Duhawks the lead when Matt Splittgerber slipped a pass through the Spartans back line. Rizzo finished his chance and give Loras a 1-0 lead.

The teams continued to battle each other and the soggy weather over the final 35 minutes with quite a bit of entertaining soccer. The highlight of the final half hour came in the 63rd minute. Senior midfielder Santiago Mejia received a pass near midfield, outran the first two Spartan defenders, dribbled around a third, and finished a low shot past Kasper to extend the lead to 2-0.

The Spartans added a goal in the 87th minute to make the closing moments of the game a little more intense on a header by Idrissa Soumaoro. Adam Kelsch made five saves in the goal for Loras.

The win put the #4 Duhawks at 7-0 in the Iowa Conference. Only a loss to Simpson combined with a loss of sportsmanship points would keep Loras from claiming that fourth title in as many tries and fifth overall.

The Duhawks host Washington University (St. Louis, MO) at 2:00 PM on Sunday in the Rock Bowl. The men are 7-0-1 in the Rock Bowl in 2009.
