Loras 63, UW-LaCrosse 52

The 2011-12 season is off to a 1-0 start for the Loras College women's basketball team after defeating the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse in the AWC on Wednesday night, 63-52.

Loras opened an early 4-0 lead after baskets by Lindsey LaBadie and Melissa Herrmann, but LaCrosse answered with a 7-0 run to set the tone for the back-and-forth contest.

The lead was as many as nine points for the visitors halfway through the first half when Rachael Salata scored five straights points for the Eagles. The Duhawks followed with an 11-0 run over a four minute stretch to change the momentum from a 24-15 Eagles lead to a 25-24 Duhawk lead. After trading baskets down the stretch of the first half, the teams headed to their first halftime tied at 33-33.

The defense stepped up in the second half for the Duhawks in a scrappy second half as each team made just six field goals over the final 20 minutes.

The Duhawks took to the free throw line for 18 of their 30 second half points as Brit Kent and Katie Langmeier combined for four of the six Duhawk baskets in the second half.

The Duhawks out-rebounded the Eagles, 49-33 and score 17 second chance points in the win.

"It wasn't always pretty, but we worked hard for the win and have to be happy with the result," head coach Justin Heinzen said after the game.

Loras will be at UW-Platteville this weekend to take on the Pioneers on Saturday and Edgewood College on Sunday as part of the Pioneers invitational weekend tournament. Saturday's tipoff is 2:30 PM and Sunday's is 12:00 noon.
