Duhawks host annual Loras Open to start 2011-12

The Loras College wrestling team dusted off the mats as the team hosted the Loras College Open at the Five Flags Center November 5thto start the 2011-12 action.

 

No team scores were recorded, but Loras was able to have a handful of wrestlers get past the first round and even greater success in the Duhawks senior standout Pat Pfantz.

 

Pfantz was able to defeat two opponents in the 125-weight class bracket to make it to the quarter finals where he was defeated by Jesse Delgado of the University of Illinois who would go on to win the 125-pound bracket.

 

Pfantz continued into the consolation bracket where he won on a decision 10-6 over Cornell College's Tim Hood before losing in the contest for third place, placing him fourth.

 

Loras saw other victories in the 174-weight class from junior Stephen Liske who beat his second round opponent by a decision of 7-3 before being knocked out in the quarter-finals.

 

In the 157-pound weight class Chris Gansen pulled out two victories in the consolation bracket beating his Coe College opponent Kyle Woods by a 10-3 decision, and following with an 18-9 major decision against Peter Crocco from UW-Platteville.

 

Mitch Gansen matched his brother with two victories in the consolation bracket of the 174-weight class; one on a decision, 6-5, and the other on fall at the 6:16 mark.

 

In the Loras College Open Silver bracket the Duhawks were able to find success in the 197-weight class with first-year Ryan Ward beating two opponents before losing in the championship giving him a second place honor.

 

Loras will get ready for a tour of matches in the state of Wisconsin when they start this weekend as they take wrestlers to Madison, Wisconsin for the University of Wisconsin Badger Duals on Nov. 13.
