The Loras College men's cross country team placed fourth at the NCAA Division III Central Region Championships in Waverly, Iowa on Saturday, Nov. 12.
The men scored a total of 141 total places to place them behind third place Hamline University with 133 team points and in front of conference foe Luther College at 161 total places. Nebraska Wesleyan won the championship with a total of 93 total places.
Of Loras' seven runners, four finished in the top 40 runners of the competition with senior Dan McDermott leading the way for the Duhawks with a ninth place finish.
After McDermott's time of 25:34, sophomore Jerry Olp followed in 21st place at 25:56, junior Austin Steil in 28th at 26:10, first-year Rob Howe in 38th at 26:21, first-year Steve Loran in 45th at 26:29, junior Chris Higgins in 51st at 26:36, and first-year Ty Wittman rounding up the squad at a time of 27:33.
The first and second place teams, Nebraka Wesleyan and St. Olaf, received automatic spots in next Saturday's national meet for besting the central region competition at the championships, while Loras and the rest of the field will wait until 2 p.m. Sunday, November 13, to find out its fate.
