Calvin 1, Carthage 0

The Calvin College Knights advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championships in Dubuque, Iowa on Friday night after a 1-0 win over Carthage College.

The Knights spent much of the first five minutes defending Carthage' early pressure, but countered with five strong minutes of their own. The following 35 minutes were spent rearranging runs and generating shots, trying to crack the scoreboard with the game's first goal.

Carthage would have more of the first half chances, but Calvin's four attempts forced Carthage goalkeeper Milan Tijanic into three saves. In the other goal, Michael Dolan made one save 11 first half shots by the Red Men.

Early in the second half, each team produced a scoring chance that the goalkeepers would tip off the crossbar in a 60-second stretch early in the second half.

It wasn't, however, until the 77thminute when the scoreboard finally moved off of 0-0.

Zach Willis' cross was headed home by Nick Holtrop to break the scoreless draw.

The Red Med would take four more shots over the final 13 minutes, but Dolan and the Calvin defense were up for the task and made Holtop's fourth goal of the season hold up as the game-winner.

Calvin will play Loras at 6:00 PM central time on Saturday in the Rock Bowl in the regional finals in Dubuque, Iowa. The game will be streamed live HERE.
