Loras 1, Luther 0

Loras completed its path to the top of the Iowa Conference in a fast-paced 1-0 victory over the #1 Luther College Norse in Decorah on Saturday afternoon.

Loras, ranked 14th in the nation, improved to 16-2-3. Luther entered the match ranked 22nd in the country and are now 15-3-2 overall.

First-year midfielder Johnny Rummelhart redirected a Sean Lewis cross into the back of the net in the 43rd minute to give the Duhawks all that they needed in the 2011 Iowa Conference Tournament championship game.

Loras put 12 shots on the net in the first half when they were attacking with the steady wind from the southeast, mostly coming off of the nine corner kicks they produced. Into the wind in the second half, they were able to produce enough offense to keep the Norse at a relatively safe distance.

Luther netminder Steve O'Meara, who had three saves, went into the match not allowing a goal to an IIAC opponent all season, but Loras struck with their first half tally, also ending Luther's 15-match unbeaten streak.

Loras goalkeeper Nate DuBois, who saved all seven shots (four in the first half, three in the second) that came on frame, posted his second shutout in as many games in the tournament after beating Central in the semi-finals before closing out Luther on Saturday.

It was Loras' second consecutive IIAC tournament title and fourth overall (2005, 2007, 2010, 2011). The Duhawks secured the Iowa Conference's automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championships which begin Thursday, November 10.
