Loras 2, Central 0

Only the Central Dutch put in three goals on the Duhawks in one game in 2011. They scored them all in the first half of the regular season match on October 8 – a 3-3 double overtime draw. Loras was looking to erase the memories of that draw and advance in the 2011 IIAC Tournament on Wednesday night. With a goal in each half off the bench, they did just that.

The Duhawks took a total of eight shots on the Central goal over the first 33 minutes of the cold and rainy match, but the ninth turned out to be the game-winner.

Brad Joiner slipped what looked like a harmless pass into the feet of Forrest Olson inside the penalty box. Olson, who was facing Joiner, tapped a pass to himself around his defender and turned to face Dutch goalkeeper David Ziemann. Ziemann approached Olson cautiously in a quick moment of confrontations, but the sophomore substitute quickly knocked in the game's first goal.

In the second half, looking to extend the lead and ensure victory, the Duhawks turned to Johnny Rummelhart in the 79thminute. Kyle Quillin emerged at the top of the Dutch penalty box and swept a ball towards the back post. An individual attempt on goal turned into an assist when the speedy Johnny Rummelhart broke through on the back post to finish the insurance goal.

Loras held a 10-2 shots-on-goal advantage over the 90-minute match. Nate DuBois made both of the saves he needed to make to earn the shutout in goal, his seventh of 2011.

The win puts the Duhawks (15-2-2) in the IIAC Tournament finals against top-seeded Luther College (15-2-3) in Decorah on Saturday. It is the Duhawks' ninth straight appearance in the tournament final – they earned wins in 2005, 2007, and 2010. The Norse went 8-0 in IIAC regular season games this year, all without conceding a goal, including a 2-0 October 19 win over the Duhawks in Decorah. Kickoff time will be determined on Thursday.
