Riley leads offense in four-set loss

Cornell 3, Loras 1

 

The Loras College volleyball team wrapped up the regular season in Mount Vernon, Iowa on Wednesday night with a 3-1 loss to the Cornell Rams. The loss puts the Duhawks at 4-4 in the IIAC ahead of next week's IIAC Tournament.

  

Loras scored 17 points in each of the sets they dropped on Wednesday, the first, second, and fourth of the night. In the middle of the Rams' win was a convincing 25-14 win in set number three for the visiting Duhawks.

 

Regan Riley led the Loras attack with 14 kills, hitting .270 on the night and adding 10 digs for a double-double.

 

Julie Rogers had 23 assists and Shawn Reilly chipped in with 10 for the Loras offense. Reilly led the team with two aces in her two sets of action. Micaela Mertens posted a team high 22 digs. Kirsten Schultz had 2.5 blocks.

 

The Rams hit .216 for the night, led by Taylor Dicus' 19 kills. Cornell used six aces to help their point total on the night.

 

Loras wrapped up the regular season 10-22 and 4-4 in the IIAC, which puts the Duhawks fourth in the league standings based on tiebreakers. The Duhawks will host a Tuesday night opening round match with Central College, who the Duhawks have faced three times already in 2011.

 

During a three week stretch from October 1-21, Loras defeated the Dutch in the IIAC regular season match in the AWC, 3-0 on October 11. At the Dutch's tournament on October 1 Central won 3-1. Most recently, the teams met at the UW-LaCrosse Tournament on October 21 where Central won a marathon five-setter 3-2.

 

The #4 and #5 seeds in the 2011 IIAC Tournament will begin at 7:00 PM on Tuesday night in the AWC for a spot in the semifinals at #1 Coe College on November 3.
