Loras 4, Luther 1

The women's soccer team went into Wednesday night's game in Decorah at the top of the Iowa Conference standings and would end the night still with a zero in their loss column, beating Luther College 4-1.

The Duhawks scored two goals in the first 13 minutes en route to the 4-1 victory over Luther. Junior Jayne Eslinger started the scoring in the 5thminute off of a corner kick from Ali Schmitt, giving her five goals on the season.

Senior Kate Young scored her 10thgoal of the season, assisted by Danielle Vujovic, in the 12 minute to cap off the early start.

Luther would help the Duhawk cause by putting a goal in their own net in the 32ndminute allowing Loras to enter halftime with a lead of 3-0.

Loras outshot the Norse 19-1 in the first half, also getting many opportunities from the corner with six corner kicks.

In the second half Luther poured in more shots with 9, while Loras had 6. However, in the 80thminute first-year Jill Leibforth scored her first collegiate goal on a pass from Lisa Waltz.

A goal by the Norse during the 87 minute gave the game its final score of 4-1. Loras had a total of 13 shots on goal, and goalkeeper Katie Chambers had two saves in net.

The victory ups Loras a record of 13-2-1 record overall, and a record of 6-0-1 in conference accumulating a total 19 points that puts Loras 3 points ahead of second-place Wartburg College.

The Duhawks have two matches remaining on the regular season schedule and have the benefit of both at the Rock Bowl. Loras will have its ‘Senior Night' when it hosts Washington University (St. Louis), Oct. 23, at 1:30 p.m. On Wednesday, Oct. 26, the Duhawks will close out their conference and regular season schedule when they host Cornell College at 6:00 p.m.
