#7 Loras 5, #8 Dominican 0
About 24 hours removed from a frustrating home draw (3-3) against Central College in the Rock Bowl, the #7 Duhawks men's soccer team was on the road in River Forest, Illinois to take on #8 Dominican University. The Duhawks were looking to quickly erase Saturday's IIAC result from their memory, while challenging a Stars team which they've matched up with regularly in recent years in both the NCAA Division III Tournament and regular season.
Saturday's result was a distant memory just 4:18 into the game when Chris Comstock ran to the back post and sharply headed home Loras' first goal. Camilo Garces and Donald St. George combined late in the possession to find Comstock.
Just three and a half minutes later St. George took his turn finding the back of the net, heading home a perfectly placed one-time pass from Alejandro Cosmopolis on the Stars' doorstep.
Sandwiching around the halftime intermission, Brad Joiner scored twice on Sunday to help extend Loras' lead. In the 24thminute, he made it 3-0 Loras when he took Johnny Rummelhart's pass and turned to face Dan Cimicata in the Dominican goal. Joiner blasted a shot that was too hot to handle for Cimicata, glancing off his hands and over the line.
Joiner's next effort came in a similar situation – this time from a tougher angle – but with the same result. Joiner rocketed a shot to the side netting, using a St. George assist to take control of the second half six minutes into the final 45.
Loras' final goal came on a corner kick in the 70thminute. Forrest Olson sent the kick towards the front of Dominican goal where Kyle Marxkors dove towards the driven pass to score Loras' third goal of the game with their heads and fifth of the afternoon.
The loss was one of the worst suffered on their home field by the traditionally strong Dominican side, according to their post-game release. The Loras fan base was also out in force in the suburban Chicago setting and offered significant support to the purple and gold throughout the match.
Loras took eight shots in each half, forcing Cimicata into three saves and beating he and the Stars defense five times on the afternoon. Nate DuBois made one save in each half to preserve the shutout for the Duhawks in front of a steady and no-nonsense back line.
The early October grind continues for the Duhawks when they host Wartburg College (6-6, 2-1) at 8:00 PM on Wednesday night in the Rock Bowl. #7 Loras is now 11-1-2 overall ahead of Tuesday's weekly rankings release.
