Loras take 1st at Wartburg

 

The Loras College men's cross country team, ranked fourth in the USTFCCCA Central Region and on the edge of cracking the top 35 national rankings, took a huge step towards that national list by winning the Dan Huston Invite in Waverly, Iowa on Saturday.

 

The Duhawks were again led to the finish line by Dan McDermott, who came to the line in sixth place. McDermott led a group of five Duhawk runners who finished in the top 20. The senior's time was 26:22.

 

Jerry Olp and Austin Steil were next to the line for Loras, finishing in 11thplace and 12thplace in 26:35 and 26:42.

 

The next four Duhawks, all freshmen, came in under 28 minutes, with the two scoring places remaining for the Duhawks finishing in the top 20 and finishing under the 27 minutes.

 

In 14thplace, just seven seconds behind Steil, was Steve Loran (26:49). Rob Howe was 20th, finishing the Wartburg College course in 26:59.

 

Ty Wittman was 35thin the 174-runner field in 27:27 and Ryan Sheeran 43rdin 27:49.

 

The Duhawks beat both of the top 20 teams at the meet on their way to the Dan Huston title.

 

The Duhawks will host their annual meet next, the Dr. Robert Tucker Invitational, on Friday. The men's race is scheduled to begin at 5:15 PM at the Dubuque Soccer Complex.
