The Loras College men's soccer team moved their unbeaten streak to nine games and their winning streak to seven with their two wins over the weekend. On Friday night in the Rock Bowl Loras won an entertaining 1-0 game over Augsburg and went on the road to take down Buena Vista 5-0.
Loras 1, Augsburg 0
The home crowd waited 72 minutes to see the Friday night's lone goal in Loras' 1-0 win over the previously unbeaten Augsburg College Auggies – but it was a memorable one from Sean Lewis.
Lewis netted his first goal of 2011 after Kevin Cavers took off into the attacking third of the field and found Tim Van den Bergh on the right side of the Augsburg penalty box – battling to send a pass across the face of the Auggies goal where Lewis finished with one touch.
Much of the first half was spent with the teams trading attacks that stalled before threatening either goal – leading to a back and forth mix of offense and defense for both teams. The best exception to that came in the ninth minute when Augsburg's Ahmed Gobana rocked the crossbar.
Two late chances in the first half came off the foot of Pat Langan, who hit a free kick into the Augsburg wall and followed with another shot that was saved by Clayton Lynch.
The second half provided a little more offense in terms of shots towards each goal, but none in the second half were on goal until Lewis' effort. Nate DuBois' save came in the 84thminute to preserve the shutout.
Thirty seconds from the end of regulation, a dangerous Augsburg free kick led to a mess of bodies inside the Loras goal as the visitors pushed for an equalizer. After the dust settled, a confrontation outside the penalty area led to a red card for Augsburg's Gobana.
The Duhawks finished their September 6-0 at home with the win.
Loras 5, Buena Vista 0
The Duhawks took to the road early Saturday morning to play their second IIAC game of the year against Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa where the Beavers competed for the first time within boundaries of their recently renovated stadium on campus.
The result was a strong one, a 5-0 win over the Beavers.
Loras struck twice in the first half, including the first goal in Loras uniform by Tim Van den Bergh in the 12thminute after a Camilo Garces assist. Loras then benefited from a Buena Vista own goal in the 31stminute – earning them a 2-0 halftime lead.
The second half saw a trio of Duhawks find the back of the net, including two in the final five minutes. Alejandro Cosmopolis scored his second of the year in the 79thminute. Then Tom Fluegel added his third of the year in the 85thminute and Dillon Olson took an assist from his brother Forrest in the 89thminute to score his first goal as a Duhawk.
Loras moved to 2-0 in the IIAC with road games against Coe and Central on the slate for next week.
