Duhawks go 1-2 at the Central Classic

The Duhawks travelled to Pella, Iowa this weekend to play in the Central College Classic – which included three total matches with St. Catherine, Central College and Bethel University. Loras finished 1-2.

 

Loras 3, St. Catherine 1

On Friday night, the Duhawks won their contest over St. Catherine, 3-1, after rallying from the one-set deficit.

 

St. Catherine won Set #1 25-12 before the Duhawks rattled off three straight wins. The final three sets were each closely contested, with Loras prevailing with three-, two-, and four-point wins.

 

Kaity Frost led the Duhawks with an impressive 19 kills – hitting .293 on the night. She added nine digs, one ace, and four block assists. Julie Rogers logged 40 assists and had a team high three aces – adding eight digs to her line. Micaela Mertens and Regan Riley tied for the team lead in digs with 14.

 

Loras outblocked St. Catherine 6-2 and hit .231 – their fifth best effort of the season.

 

Central 3, Loras 0

The Central match on Saturday started with the opposite results of Friday night's win over St. Catherine. The Duhawks won the thrilling first set 33-31 over the hosts before dropping three straight.

 

Three Duhawks reached double digits in kills. Regan Riley led the Duhawks with 15, followed by Kenzie Goedken's 13 and Kaity Frost's 11. Micaela Mertens registered a team high 25 digs – and four Duhawks joined her in double digits there, including Goedken (17), Julie Rogers (14), Riley (11) and Frost (10). Rogers had 39 assists.

 

Loras was solid from the serving line – logging nine aces. Offensively, the Duhawks hit .102 to the Dutch's .198.

 

The teams will meet on October 11 in the AWC on Pink Night for the Duhawks in the official Iowa Conference regular season matchup. Central is currently 3-1 with the Duhawks sitting at 3-2.

 

Bethel 3, Loras 1

The third straight match of the weekend to see the losing team win set one was the final match of the weekend for the Duhawks.

 

Loras won 25-23 in the first set before dropping three straight to Bethel.

 

Regan Riley and Kenzie Goedken each logged 12 kills for the Duhawks and Julie Rogers had 30 assists in the loss. Riley and Goedken (who hit .303 in the match) had double-doubles with Goedken digging up 13 Bethel attacks and Riley posting 12 of her own.

 

Micaela Mertens had 19 digs to lead the defense.

 

Loras' Regan Riley was named to the All-Tournament Team at the conclusion of the weekend.

 

Next up for the Duhawks is a midweek road game in Dubuque against Clarke University on Tuesday night. First serve is 7:30 PM.
