Wartburg 3, Loras 0

Picked by the coaches to finish first in the IIAC and entering the AWC as the #24 team in the most recent AVCA poll, the Wartburg College Knights handed the Duhawks their first Iowa Conference loss of 2011 on Friday night, 3-0.

Loras fell to 5-6 and 2-1 in the IIAC with the loss.

The Knights took control early of all three sets in Friday night's home opener – with the Duhawks rallying in the middle of the third set to put some pressure on their guests.

The runs of points weren't enough to overcome the balanced attack of Wartburg, who hit .194 in the win.

Kaity Frost and Regan Riley each recorded seven kills for the Duhawks to tie for team high honors. Riley had nine digs to tie for the team lead in that category as well. She matched setter Julie Rogers' total. Rogers posted 22 assists in the loss.

Loras posted four aces in the match, one apiece from Rogers, Frost, and first year players Anna Wernimont and Eliza Slanker.

Britlyn Sieck and Kamille Van Natta each had eight kills to lead the Knights, who out-blocked the Duhawks 8-4 and put down 11 more kills.

Loras will be back in action in the AWC on Wednesday, September 21 when they host Iowa Conference foe Simpson College. First serve is scheduled for 7:30 PM.
