Loras 4, UWP 2
The Loras College men's soccer team handled the UW-Platteville Pioneers after 90 minutes in the Rock Bowl on Tuesday night – after both teams traded goals in the opening 45 minutes.
It took less three minutes for the Duhawks to claim a 1-0 lead when Dan Figura scored his third goal of the year by heading in a corner kick from Kevin Cavers.
That lead was short-lived, however, as Platteville answered 60 seconds later when Ryan McElmeel worked his way behind the Loras defense to make it 1-1.
More first half scoring came from Joiner in what was a carbon copy of Loras' goal-scoring output in Sunday's win over Macalester. First, a Figura header, and then a Joiner shot from about 10 yards away. This one came on a rebound after the Duhawks put repeated pressure on Jared Kuehl in the Pioneers' goal.
Platteville again answered Loras' home field effort with Brandon Chimel's lofted shot in the 32ndminute.
The teams traded a couple of rushes to in front of the opposition's goal, but the score held at 2-2 until halftime.
The Duhawks came out quickly in the second half, taking four shots in the opening 15 minutes of the second half. The fourth of those efforts came off the foot of Johnny Rummelhart and required a diving effort by Kuehl to keep the game 2-2. That tie lasted only a split second longer as Kuehl's save was deflected off of a teammate and into the goal to give the Duhawks their third lead of the game.
Just two minutes later, Donald St. George drove home the game's final goal, his first of 2011, from the top of the 18-yard box. The Pioneers took five shots in the second half as the defense cleaned up their first half mistakes. Nate DuBois made three of his four saves in the second half to keep the Pioneers from equalizing a third time.
The win was Loras' tenth consecutive in the Rock Bowl.
The Duhawks and Pioneers will host a weekend full of soccer in their co-op invitational this weekend. The Loras men's team will play on Saturday at 1:30 PM against Nebraska Wesleyan in the Rock Bowl, and then again on Sunday at 2:30 PM against St. Norbert. Sunday's game will be the Duhawks' annual game devoted to a charitable group. For the second consecutive year, the teams will play for Louverture Cleary School in Haiti and The Haiti Project – a school in the earthquake ravaged country which Loras has been affiliated with for a decade.
