The #8-ranked Duhawks spent the first part of Labor Day weekend in Wheaton, Illinois at the Bob Baptista Invitational. They opened Friday afternoon with a 3-1 loss to host Wheaton College and followed with a 1-0 win over DePauw.

Wheaton 3, Loras 1

Things were off to a solid start when the Duhawks opened the scoring, but three unanswered goals by the hosts put the Duhawks in the loss column after the 2011 season opener.

Nine minutes into the match Madeline Tennant was credited with the first goal of the 2011 season for the Duhawks. Ali Schmitt's corner kick was left on the doorstep after rushing past the near post for Tennant to touch beyond the line.

That goal would be the only one the Duhawks could muster on the afternoon.

Keri Shannon opened the scoring for Wheaton after an initial save by Michelle Vonachen. The ball fell into the path of Shannon, who tied the score at 1-1 in the 16thminute. Ten minutes later the Thunder took the lead for good on a Val Lelle close range shot that Vonachen had a piece of.

That's where the score stood as the Duhawks shifted to an aggressive formation in order to find an equalizer.

With nearly five minutes to play Jamie Orewiler made her way through the right side of the box and tucked home an insurance goal for the hosts.

Jessica Kern led the Duhawks with four shots in the game.

Loras 1, DePauw 0

Loras made their way into the win column for the first time in 2011 thanks to a Rachel Rieger goal in the 68thminute.

In a game which saw the Duhawks earn a 25-3 shot advantage (including 17-2 in the second half), Rieger's tally proved to be enough. Kate Young led the Duhawks with seven shots.

The occasional trip in front of the Loras goal never led to a true save from Michelle Vonachen and the Duhawks earned their first shutout on their way to the win column.

Rieger's game-winner was headed home off a Lynn DeVriese cross.

Loras returns to action on Wednesday when they take on UW-Whitewater on the road. Kickoff is 5:30 PM.
