Road loss to BVU has Loras at 1-2 in IIAC

The Loras College football team lost their second Iowa Conference contest of 2009 on Saturday, 27-13 in Storm Lake, Iowa. The Buena Vista Beavers opened a three touchdown lead and converted two second-quarter Duhawk fumbles into quick-strike scores to set Loras back early.

Loras mounted a small comeback in the second half behind freshman quarterback Elliot Davidson and were within seven points (20-13) after John Ingersoll's second touchdown catch of the afternoon early in the fourth quarter. The Beavers immediately put together a 12-play, 67-yard drive that ended with BVU quarterback Brandon Phelan's third touchdown pass of the day to close out the scoring.

Some bright spots in the box score were overshadowed by the six sacks against Loras quarterbacks and two lost fumbles. In the absence of sophomore quarterback Vaughn Gesing, the Duhawks trotted out Brody Budmayr and Elliot Davidson as play-callers on Saturday. Budmayr went 2-for-5 in the air for 40 yards and rushed for 15 yards on five carries. One of Budmayr's completions was the 32-yard toss to John Ingersoll for Loras' first touchdown. Davidson was 12-for-21 for 98 yards in the air. Davidson was sacked five times and netted zero yards on the ground on eight "attempts".

Defensively, Loras was led by Kale McCormick's 8.5 tackles and the Duhawks did produce nine tackles for loss. David Zoeckler intercepted Phelan in the second quarter and returned it 29 yards.

Gavin Kaiser ran the ball five times for 37 yards and caught four passes for 32. He also had 35 yards in the return game, but fumbled once as well. Johnny Jackson and Beau Evans combined for 27 yards on 11 carries for Loras' backfield. Ingersoll totaled five catches for 69 yards and both of Loras' touchdowns.

For Buena Vista, Brandon Phelan went 13-for-19 in the air and threw for three touchdowns. His favorite target was Bryce Meyer, who had five grabs for 107 yards and two touchdowns. John Hill averaged just 2.1 yards per carry on 224 attempts.

Loras returns to action on Saturday evening with the annual tilt against the University of Dubuque. The first night game in the series will kick off at 6:00 PM at Chalmers Field. For the second consecutive year, the teams will be donating the proceeds of "The Rivalry by the River" to a charitable organization. Fans can listen locally on AM 1490-WDBQ beginning at 5:30 PM. This year's game is also Dubuque's Homecoming.
