Duhawks split with Spartans
Wed, May. 4, 2011 - [Baseball]

The Loras College baseball team hosted cross town rival University of Dubuque Tuesday night and split the doubleheader. The Duhawks took the first game, 4-1, but dropped the second, 8-1.

Game 1 - Loras 4, Dubuque 1

The top of the order set the table for the Duhawks in the first inning with a leadoff walk by Mike Pudlo and single by Mike Canevello. Both runners advanced after a ground out to third by Austin Brown. A wild pitch then allowed Pudlo to score and Loras added another run after a RBI double to left by Kyle Soeder, scoring Canevello.

A wild pitch allowed the Duhawks to score another run in the third after a Brown double to left center, giving Loras a 3-0 lead over the Spartans. The double by Brown extended his on base streak to 23 games.

In the fourth inning, Connor Reilly drew a two out walk and stole second for his second stolen base of the season. Clay Henricksen knocked Reilly in on a single to put the Duhawks up four runs.

The Spartans pushed a run across the plate in the sixth inning after a couple errors by the Duhawks, but a double play limited the damage, putting the score at 4-1 in the Duhawks favor, where the game would end.

Kendall Paluch threw his fifth complete game, allowing just two hits and one unearned run. The freshman from Joliet, IL improved his record to 6-3 on the season and an Iowa Conference best 1.20 ERA.

Game 2 - Dubuque 8, Loras 1

Loras was unable to repeat their strong start in the night cap. Six hits in the first inning provided the Spartans with four runs then a RBI double and a sacrifice fly pushed the Dubuque lead to six runs after an inning and a half.

BJ Juergens led off the second with a double to right center and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After Calvin Rea drew a walk, Connor Reilly reached on a fielder's choice, knocking in Juergens to put the Duhawks on the board. However, that was all Loras could squeeze as the Spartans starter, Mark Hennessy was effective on the mound as he tried to avenge a loss he took to the Duhawks in last week's nine inning game.

Dubuque added two runs in the sixth on a couple RBI singles to stretch their lead out to an 8-1 margin.

Austin Brown's leadoff single in the fourth inning extended his on base streak to 24 games. The Dyersville native is now hitting .405 on the season, second best in the Iowa Conference.

In between games, the Duhawks recognized their "buddies" from Prescott Elementary School. The team makes regular trips to the downtown Dubuque school to mentor a student in school work, and often times are able to join in some games as well. Over a dozen of the students were able to make it to the game between the two Dubuque colleges.

The Duhawks wrap up their regular season this weekend in a three game series against Wartburg at Petrakis Park. Friday night's nine inning game will start at 6:00 pm and Saturday's doubleheader's first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm. Loras will be looking to improve their record to catch Central or Luther for the final spot in the IIAC Tournament. Loras will have to avoid being tied with either the Dutch or the Norse and leap one of them completely, as the two teams each hold the tiebreaker over the Duhawks, requiring a sweep by Loras to give them a chance.
