The Duhawks are ready for the Iowa Conference Tournament following doubleheader sweeps of league foes Wartburg and non-Conference Grinnell. Three of the four games were played in five innings.
Game 1, Loras 10 - Wartburg 0 (5 innings)
The Loras College Duhawks tallied ten hits and ten runs, scoring in every frame but the third on the road in Waverly. Pitcher Kellie Klein gave up only three hits in Game 1.
Offensively, Kelsey Techlin led the Duhawks going 2-for-3 and Katelyn Jones and Tracy Sullivan also went 2-for-4. Jones had a season high five RBI's, Techlin scored three times and Beth Miller scored twice as the Duhawks cruised to the victory.
Game 2, Loras 8 - Wartburg 3
Two out rally was the name of the game in Game 2.
The Duhawks rallied back in the top of the seventh, down by one run, to score six of their eight runs to topple the Knights in the nightcap of the doubleheader.
The Duhawks were led offensively by left fielder Beth Miller, and third baseman Deanna Angelini who went 2-for-4 and 2-for-3, respectively.
Wartburg came out strong with a two-run homerun in the top of the first. The Duhawks quickly responded in the top of the third with a lead-off single by Angelini, a sacrifice bunt by Niki Rivera, and an RBI triple by Beth Miller put the Duhawks on the board with one run. Then a quick inning defensively returned the Duhawks up to bat. A solo homerun by sophomore Kellie Klein tied the game a two.
But the Knights responded with another solo homerun in the bottom of the fifth by Ashley Bienemann. Then a quick three up-three down in the sixth by the Knights offense brought the Duhawks up again for a last chance. With a lead-off double by Angelini, a couple of Wartburg errors, and five Duhawk hits, gave the Duhawks completed the sweep and returned to Dubuque as a qualifier for the 2011 Iowa Conference Softball Tournament.
Some say it was senior day, but the Loras College Softball team refers to it as Senior Weekend. And a senior weekend it was. The last home game for six seniors; Tracy Sullivan, Sara Palczynski, Michelle Sabatini, Kelsey Techlin, Deanna Angelini, and Ashley Reimer will hopefully never be forgotten by the Duhawk softball family.
Game 1, Loras 11 - Grinnell 2 (5 innings)
In the opener of Senior Day, pitcher Michelle Sabatini gave up only three hits while the Duhawks offense scored in every inning out hitting Grinnell twelve to three.
In the Duhawk line-up everyone either had a hit or scored a run. The Duhawks were led by senior Sara Palczynski, who went 3-for-3 with two singles and a homerun. The long ball was her fourth of the season.
Game 2, Loras 8 - Grinnell 0 (5 Innings)
The Duhawks took advantage of their familiarity with Grinnell's pitcher, who threw both games on Sunday. In this game, every Duhawk batter earned a hit. Multiple-hit efforts included Beth Miller, Katelyn Jones, Sullivan, Palczynski, Angelini, and Niki Rivera.
As a whole the Duhawks combined for seventeen hits, and no strikeouts.
It was a great day for the senior class of 2011, and an even greater day for the Loras College Duhawks who are on a four game winning streak as they advance to play in the Iowa Conference Tournament as the #5 seed.
The Duhawks will play Simpson College Storm Thursday, May 5th at 10:00am. A win in that game will put them in a 2:00 PM contest with the top-seeded Luther College Norse. This is the third trip to the IIAC Tournament the Duhawks have made under the current format, which began in 2006. The Duhawks are 0-4 all time in their two trips to the highly competitive tournament. Luther College is the defending champion.
