Loras 9, Dubuque 2

The Loras College baseball team began their final stretch of the 2011 regular season, all in Dubuque, on Wednesday with a 9-2 win over the Dubuque Spartans.

The Duhawks struck first with a single run on Dubuque starter Mark Hennessy in the top of the first inning. It came after Kyle Soeder drove in Mike Canevello, who doubled with one out in the inning.

Dubuque answered with a leadoff triple and an RBI groundout before Loras starter Kendall Paluch settled into his seventh start of the year. The teams were tied at one after one, with eight innings to go. Loras outscored the Spartans 8-1 over the final eight innings to claim the victory.

That run started right away in the top of the second with two walks, two hits, and RBIs from Mike Canevello and Austin Brown. Brown's two-out single extended his hitting streak to 19 games.

Andrew Danna's second triple of the afternoon led to the second run for Dubuque in the third and cut the Loras lead to 3-2. Loras quickly extended the lead back to two runs when Joe Walker singled, stole second, tagged up to reach third, and then reached home on an RBI groundout by Mike Canevello.

The scoring slowed from the fifth through the seventh innings when the teams combined for just two hits.

Kyle Soeder's day picked up in the late innings, starting with his leadoff double in the eighth. Soeder would later be driven in by a Connor Reilly sacrifice fly.

Kevin Moriarty entered in the eighth inning to relieve Paluch and struck out two Spartans.

Loras put together their biggest inning of the day in the ninth. After a walk and a single, BJ Juergens singled home Canevello. Then Soeder struck with his second home run of the year, this one a three-run shot scoring Juergens and Brown. That bomb closed the scoring at 9-2, in favor of the visiting Duhawks.

Spencer Radabaugh threw the ninth, a 1-2-3 inning that included a leadoff strikeout.

Canevello turned in his first three-hit performance of the year, and Soeder his second. Walker's stolen bases were his 16th and 17th of the year. Paluch scattered four hits and struck out four in his seven innings of work.

The Duhawks will host Buena Vista this weekend at Petrakis Park beginning Friday night at 6:00 PM. Beginning with Wednesday's game at Dubuque, Loras closes their 2011 season with nine games in Dubuque, and eight at home. They are now 15-16 overall and 6-10 in the Iowa Conference.
