The Loras College baseball team worked around Mother Nature this weekend in Decorah, Iowa where they faced the Luther College Norse. The teams played a single nine inning game on Saturday and a doubleheader on Sunday. The Duhawks were swept by the Norse despite two quality pitching outings and a hitting streak extended to 16 games.
Game 1 - Luther 2, Loras 0
Kendall Paluch continued his dominating work from the mound, pitching eight innings and allowing just four hits and two runs, which both crossed the plate unearned. The freshman right-hander also added six strikeouts and lowered his ERA to a team best 1.35. Luther scored two runs on a single after an error and a balk allowed the Norse to move into scoring position in the fourth inning.
Unfortunately the Duhawks couldn't get their bats going and were shutout in the opener. Mike Canevello went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and Austin Brown was 1-for-3.
Game 2 - Luther 4, Loras 1
In the first game of Sunday's doubleheader, it was once again a pitcher's battle as the first runs of the game weren't scored until the bottom of the 5th on a Norse two-run triple. The Duhawks responded in the top half of the 6th loading the bases with no outs, but were only able to push across one run on a BJ Juergens sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Mike Canevello.
Luther responded by scoring two more runs in the bottom of the 6th, to extend their lead to 4-1. Loras was unable to capitalize on a double by Connor Reilly in their final at bat in the 7th inning.
Cole Boge pitched five innings, allowing just two runs on six hits and two strikeouts. Mike Canevello, Clay Hendricksen, Austin Brown, and Calvin Rea all reached base on singles.
Game 3 - Luther 12, Loras 7
Loras fell behind early in the second game of Sunday's doubleheader, allowing eight runs in the first three innings - but the Duhawks weren't about to give up in the series finale. After a Connor Reilly single and walk by Jordan Ries, Travis Olson drove in Reilly on a double and Mike Pudlo followed with an RBI on a fielder' choice. Mark Jablonski walked and Austin Brown knocked in Olson with a double. Kyle Barton reached on an error, allowing Jablonski to come around to score. Kevin Harlander knocked in Brown with a fielder's choice and Soeder got in on the action with an RBI single to right field allowing Barton to score, completing the 6-run inning.
The Duhawks cut the Norse lead to one run after a Brown single pushed Pudlo across in the top of the 6th inning. However, Luther responded in the bottom half with four runs to push their lead to five runs at 12-7, where the game would end.
After hitting safely in all three games, Brown extended his hitting streak to 16 games and a team-best .394 batting average.
Loras heads to Rock Island, Illinois on Wednesday to take on Augustana College in a single nine inning game, starting at 7:00 p.m. The Duhawks will then face Dominican University at River Forest, Illinois on Thursday starting at 3:00 p.m.
