The Loras College Softball team continued their Iowa Conference portion of the season and traveled to Indianola, Iowa to face the Simpson Storm over the weekend. The Duhawks fell twice to the Storm and are now 3-3 in Iowa Conference play.

Game 1, Simpson 9 - Loras 1 (5 innings)

Game one for the Duhawks just wasn't what they had hoped for. Defense wins championships, some say, and the Loras College softball team left their defense in Dubuque for Game 1.

The Duhawks started off with Kelsey Techlin reached first by a Simpson's third baseman error. But the Duhawks could do nothing more to advance the runner. Deanna Angelini fouled out, Katelyn Jones popped up, and Sara Palczynski walked. That led Techlin being caught stealing at third base to end the top of the first.

A pair of quick innings went by until the third, fourth, and fifth innings came. In those three innings, the Duhawks committed five costly errors that would score a total of seven unearned runs.

The Duhawks did get their lone run, and hit in the game, by freshman Lara Mangialardi in the fifth. Pater started the inning with a walk and Ashley Reimer came in to pinch run. Mangialardi provided a single to make it first and second with no outs. A Niki Rivera ground ball to third made for an easy force out there, keeping the situation the same, now with one away. Kelsey Techlin laid down a bunt that loaded the bases after a Storm error. Deanna Angelini provided the RBI on the bases loaded groundout to third - scoring Mangialardi.

Loras fell to 3-2 in the conference while Simpson remained undefeated at 5-0.

Game 2, Simpson 4 - Loras 2

Game 2 provided a low-scoring battle, but not enough offense to pull out a win for the Duhawks.

With Kelsey Techlin 1-for-2 and Shelby Perkins 2-for-3, they started to spark the top of the order. Beth Miller and Sara Palczynski provided the RBIs.

Simpson plated two earned runs in the bottom of the second. The Duhawks answered in the top of the fourth with a solo homerun by Palczynski, her third of the year. Again the Storm answered in the bottom of the fifth and sixth with single runs, making the score 4-1.

During the last-chance top-of-the-seventh rally for the Duhawks, Rivera grounded out to start the inning before, Kelly Hutton pinch-hit and reached first on an error. Perkins and Miller provided back to back up-the-middle singles, scoring pinch runner Reimer. A sacrifice bunt by Techlin would put Perkins and Miller at second and third with Jones up trying to find the cap to the two-out rally that the Duhawk softball team has used from time to time this year. The game ended with a groundout to short, resulting in the two-run loss.

Simpson now leads the conference with a 6-0 record and Loras fell to .500 at 3-3.

Loras will be at Dubuque on Wednesday for their fourth IIAC doubleheader of the year.
