Game 1, Loras 4 - BVU 2

Opening day of Iowa Conference softball for the Duhawks got off to a great start. After coming off a split from Platteville on Thursday, the Duhawks were ready to start the second season.

The first game was another nail biter for the purple and gold. With seven hits over eight innings, the Duhawks pulled it out the win.

In the second inning, Buena Vista scored by way of a Duhawk error. But that didn't prevent the Loras offense from answering. They bounced right back with a single by Beth Miller and a fielder's choice by Kelsey Techlin, combined with an error that led to Miller scoring and Techlin reaching third. Katelyn Jones used a ground out RBI to make the score 2-1 Loras and drive in Techlin.

Buena Vista didn't give up and added another unearned run in the top of the fourth and made the score 2-2, where the score stood all the way to the bottom of the 8th inning. Techlin started with a bunt single and Jones sacrifice bunt to put the runner in scoring position with clean-up hitter Tracy Sullivan to the plate. Already 2-for-3 on the day, Sullivan drove a winning, walk-off homerun to right center to end the game 4-2 in favor of Loras, giving them their first win of the year in the IIAC.

Kellie Klein pitched all 8 innings to get the win, allowing seven hits, two runs, and striking out seven.

Game 2, Loras 10 - BVU 1

With a win under their belt, and being 1-0 in the Conference, the Duhawks were not finished and were hungry for more. With Miller 2-for-3 and Sara Palczynski 3-for-3, the Duhawks pulled out another win over Buena Vista 10-1 in five innings. The Duhawks scored in every inning but the second in Game 2.

The game started out with a single by Miller in the bottom of the first. She stole second to reach scoring position for Jones who doubled down the left field line, scoring Miller. Palczynski also added an RBI single, and Klein doubled scoring Palczynski to quickly put 3 runs on the board.

Buena Vista couldn't answer early and the Duhawks were back in the dugout again. In the bottom of the third, three more runs crossed with just one hit and one error. The hit went to Sara Palczynski, scoring Jones and Sullivan. Ashley Reimer came in and pinch ran for Palczynski and scored on a sacrifice fly by Niki Rivera.

In the 4th inning, Buena Vista answered with a solo homerun by Erica Post to dead center. But that was all the visitors could come up with. The Duhawks answered that single run with hits from Perkins, Techlin, Sullivan, and Palczynski, and a Beaver error scoring four runs in the 4th inning.

The Duhawks went on to win a quick 5-inning, 10-1 game over the Beavers making them 2-0 early in the conference season.

They travel to Coe College (19-4, 2-0) in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Tuesday for their second IIAC doubleheader.
