The Loras College baseball team hosted Simpson College over the weekend in their first Iowa Conference series at home with one game Friday and a doubleheader on Saturday. The Duhawks lost the first on Friday, 9-4, and both games in the doubleheader, 2-1 and 6-2.

Game 1

Game 2

In the opening night game on Friday, the Duhawks jumped out to an early 2-1 lead after Mike Canevello scored on a wild pitch and an RBI double by Austin Brown that allowed BJ Juergens to score. Loras extended their lead 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth thanks to an RBI sacrifice fly by Spencer Radabaugh, scoring Brown. Simpson took the lead after scoring two runs in the fifth and four in the sixth after Loras committed two errors in each inning. The Duhawks were able to get one more run across the plate in the eighth inning provided by a Clay Henricksen sacrifice fly that scored Juergens but Loras was unable to cut into the Storm lead any more. Simpson added two insurance runs in the ninth inning that resulted in 9-4 final. Jeremey Gerardy took the loss in six innings of work, giving up seven runs but only one of which was earned.

The first game of Saturday's doubleheader started off as if it was going to be a nightmare for both team's pitching staffs as a strong wind blowing straight out to right field assisted with a Calvin Rae solo homerun in the first inning - and a two run shot by Simpson's Zach Smith in the second inning - provided early runs for both teams. But that was the end of the scoring for both teams as both starting pitchers locked in and took over. Kendall Paluch pitched all seven innings for Loras, giving up just four hits and two runs along with five strikeouts. However, the Duhawks were not able to add to their early one run lead and the game ended in a 2-1 Simpson victory.

Simpson jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning of the third game after a couple Duhawk errors and never looked back. The Duhawks struggled at the plate and got a late rally going in the seventh inning after Kyle Soeder and Mark Jablonski came around to score on a couple fielder's choice plays but those two runs were not enough as Simpson scored two runs in the fifth and seventh innings to finish with a 6-2 win. Kevin Moriarity pitched six and two-thirds giving up six runs, only three earned along with four strikeouts.

Loras heads to Cedar Rapids April 5 to take on Coe College in a doubleheader starting at 1:00pm in an Iowa Conference matchup before playing Cornell College in a three game series April 8 and 9.
