The Loras College baseball team opened up Iowa Conference play at Central College in Pella with a doubleheader on Saturday and one game on Sunday. The Duhawks lost all three in close fashion losing 2-0 and 8-5 in the doubleheader and 4-3 for the third game of the series.
In the first game of the doubleheader, freshman Kendall Paluch pitched six strong innings, giving up two runs and fit hits while striking out six batters. However, the Duhawks were unable to find their groove at the plate, finishing with just four hits in Game 1. Senior Austin Brown went 2-for-3 and leadoff man Mike Canevello showed patience drawing walks in each of his first three at-bats. BJ Juergens and Kyle Barton recorded the other two hits for Loras. Juergens also earned his second stolen base on the season.
In the second game of the day, the Duhawks were able to get some timely hits in the start of the game, scoring a combined five runs in the second and third innings. They were unable to overcome the Dutch's early lead of three runs in the first inning and two each in the second and third innings, taking the 8-5 loss. The Loras defense was unable to back up Kevin Moriarty, who allowed seven runs (three earned) in just over two innings of work. Seven errors, each by different Duhawks, cost Loras as they could not cut into the Central lead late in the game. Travis Olson led the way at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, three RBI, and a run scored. Mike Canevello went 2-for-4 at the top of the order and the 2 through 5 hitters in the lineup each scored runs for the Duhawks. Ben Cottrell pitched the final 3.2 innings, giving up just one run on three hits by the Dutch.
The third game in the series against Central was a battle as the Dutch were able to plate three early runs against the Duhawks and Kyler Laurie in his 3.2 innings of work on the mound. Loras got on the board in the fourth inning after Spencer Radabaugh was able to knock in Travis Olson after a throwing error. The Dutch were able to knock Laurie out of the game in the bottom half of the fourth where they extended their lead to four runs. Loras answered in the sixth with a run scoring single by Mike Pudlo and a fielder's choice by Kyle Barton allowed Pudlo to come around to score. Those two runs cut Central's lead down to one run, at 4-3 but the Duhawks were unable to push any additional runs across the board and lost the final game of the series, 4-3.
Loras opens up their season at Petrakis Park Tuesday against UW-Platteville at 3:30pm and then another non-conference game at home against Monmouth College on Wednesday at 3:30pm. The Duhawks continue Iowa Conference play this weekend at Petrakis Park against Simpson College with a night game on Friday at 6:00pm and a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1:00pm.
