Swimmers break school records at Liberal Arts & IIAC Championships

Loras 3rd of 11 at LAC

The Loras College women's swimming and diving team competed in the Liberal Arts and IIAC Championships February 17-19 at Coe College in Cedar Rapids and broke three school records in the process. The Duhawks finished the Liberal Arts Championships with a strong third place finish out of eleven teams, accumulating 362 points.

In the 400 Yard Medley Relay, Marguerite DelVecchio, Kenzie Murray, Katie Callaghan, and Alex Proctor broke previous record that was set in 2006 with a time of 4:09.51, finishing fourth in the Liberal Arts Championships. The same four women also broke the four year old record in the 200 Yard Medley Relay, also finishing fourth in 1:54.11. Murray also broke the 100 Yard Breaststroke record with her second place finish and time of 1:08.57, besting the old record that was set in 2005.

There were many other top performances by the Duhawks at the Liberal Arts Championships. Proctor took second place in the 50 Yard Freestyle with her time of 24.53, missing the school record she previously set by just 0.07 seconds. Proctor also finished second in the 100 Yard Freestyle and fourth in the 100 Yard Butterfly. DelVecchio earned a third place finish in the 1 meter dive with a total of 328.10 points. Murray's 2:30.52 finish in the 200 Yard Breaststroke was good for fourth place. In the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay, the team of Proctor, Murray, Callaghan, and Evayn Roper earned third place with their time of 3:44.16. In the 200 Yard Freestyle relay, a 1:42.49 finish by Proctor, Murray, DelVecchio and Roper was good for fourth place. Gabrielle Gaulke, Callaghan, Laura Danay, and Roper also finished in fourth place with their 8:33.42 finish.

In the Iowa Conference Championships, the Duhawks came in third place with a total of 375 points from the three day meet. Highlights for Loras included a first place finish for Proctor in the 100 Yard Freestyle, second in the 50 Yard Freestyle and third in the 100 Yard Butterfly. Murray finished second in the 100 Yard Breaststroke with her record breaking swim and third in the 200 Yard Breaststroke. DelVecchio placed second in the 100 Yard Backstroke and third in the 1 meter dive.

There were several strong relays for Loras, including a few second place finishes including the recording breaking swims in the 200 and 400 Yard Medley Relays. The Duhawks also earned second place in the 200, 400, and 800 Yard Freestyle Relays.

The women swimmers concluded their season with a 6-3 record in dual meets, also finishing second at the Monmouth College Invitational and Grinnell Invitational.
