Pape breaks record at Liberal Arts & IIAC Championships

The Loras College men's swimming team wrapped up their season with a strong performance at the Liberal Arts and Iowa Conference Championships February 17-19 at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, highlighted by a record breaking swim by Andy Pape. The Duhawks finished fourth in the Liberal Arts meet, out of nine teams with 371 points.

Pape's time of 53.49 in the 100 Yard Backstroke earned him a spot in the record books, breaking record set in 2010 by Zach Gries. His finished earned him fourth place in the event. Pape also finished third in the 50 Yard Freestyle with a time of 21.54 seconds. Ricky Lukacs came in second place in the 1650 Yard Freestyle and teammate Stephan Ball finished fourth in the event.

The Duhawks took second in the 800 Yard Freestyle Relay thanks to Pape, Lukacs, Ryan Momberger, and Ball who finished with a time of 7:08.67. Other relay finishes in the top five were recorded in the 400 Yard Medley Relay with their fourth place finish, consisting of Pape, Momberger, Tommy Castle, and Lukacs. Loras also took fourth in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay with a team of Lukacs, Joe Gracyalny, Ball, and Pape. Rounding out the top five finishes was the quartet of Pape, Momberger, Alec Schmidt, and Gracylany who finished fifth in the 200 Yard Medley Relay with a time of 1:39.83.

As for the Iowa Conference Championships, Loras finished in second with 549 points scored. Pape won the 50 Yard Freestyle, 100 Yard Freestyle, and the 100 Yard Backstroke with his record breaking performance. Lukas took first place in the 1650 Yard Freestyle and 400 Yard IM and second place in the 200 Yard IM. Also placing first was Ball in the 500 Yard Freestyle with a time of 4:58.99 and finished second in the 200 Yard Freestyle and third in the 1650 Yard Freestyle.

The team of Pape, Lukacs, Momberger, and Ball won the 800 Yard Freestyle Relay. Momberger competed in the 100 and 200 Yard Breaststrokes and placed second and third, respectively. Michael O'Toole finished in second in the 500 Yard Freestyle with his time of 5:07.41. Castle brought home a couple third place finishes in the 200 Yard Butterfly and 100 Yard Backstroke. Additional swimmers who earned third place included Jason DeWane in the 200 Yard Backstroke, Gracyalny in the 50 Yard Freestyle, and Colin Seidel in the 400 Yard IM.

The Duhawks placed second in three relays in the Iowa Conference Championships. Those relays include the 200 and 400 Medley Relays and the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay.

The Loras swimmers end their season with at 4-3 record in dual meets, also finishing first at the Monmouth College Invitational and second as a team in the Grinnell Invitational.
