Duhawks defense steps up at Dubuque

Once again needing a conference victory to keep the hope of a conference tournament appearance alive, the Loras College men's basketball team did just that with a 63-56 win over cross town rival, University of Dubuque on Saturday.

Travis Guy paced the Duhawks with 15 points in 4-of-6 shooting and 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Jordan Harrelson and Tim Kelly scored 12 points apiece, shooting a combined 10-of-13 from the field. Leading scorer on the season, Dan Pawelski was held in check with only 2 points but grabbed 11 rebounds in a slugfest between the rival schools. Harrelson recorded 6 rebounds of his own plus a few highlight plays including two dunks and big second half block.

The Duhawks had a lead or were tied for nearly 35 minutes of the game and took a three point lead into halftime and never gave it up. An Achilles' heel for Loras most of the season has been their free-throw shooting but the Duhawks shot 83% from the charity strip on 15-of-18. On the other hand University of Dubuque struggled, going 12-of-19 from the line.

Loras also was able to defend very well throughout the game, holding the Spartans to just 33% shooting from the field, including their stifling defense at the 3-point line, limiting Dubuque to only four three point shots on twenty four attempts.

Taylor Blum led the Spartans with 14 points but the Duhawks were able to hold him in check by keeping him to 6-of-16 from the field and 2-of-7 from the 3-point line.

Loras moved to 5-7 in Iowa Conference play and just one game behind Buena Vista in the loss column for the sixth place position with the victory over Dubuque.

The Duhawks travel to Storm Lake on Monday night to take on Buena Vista for a rescheduled game from last Wednesday before hosting Coe at home Wednesday night.
