Guy's floater with two and a half minutes to go holds up
Mon, Jan. 31, 2011 - [Men's Basketball]

With their backs against the wall and at risk of falling five games below five hundred in Iowa Conference play, the Loras College men's basketball team took down league leading Luther College in the AWC on Saturday, 51-50.

Tim Kelly and Ryan Coon each score ten points off the bench Dan Pawelski grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Duhawks' efforts. While no one scored more than ten points for Loras, significant contributions came from different players on Saturday. Jordan Harrelson blocked three shots and registered six assists. Mike Gleason made two three pointers. Tyson Handsaker went 4-for-4 from the free throw line.

The Duhawks erased a six point halftime deficit by limiting the Norse to 5-of-26 shooting over the final 20 minutes, including 0-of-9 from long distance. Dan Larson's field goal with 12 minutes to go (and free throw to complete the three point play) was Luther's only field goal down the stretch, until Tyler Wedemeier made a short jumper with a minute and a half left to make the score 51-50. The Norse went 6-of-10 from the free throw line during the 10:30 stretch without a field goal.

Guy's shot went down with over two minutes left, and the Duhawks missed their final three shots, two of which came from long distance. On Luther's final possession, Coon's post defense forced the Norse into a longer distance, lower percentage shot when he denied the basketball a chance into the paint. Instead, Tim Merritt, who was 1-of-6 from long distance on the night, had to take a three pointer that was rebounded by Jordan Harrelson to end the game.

The Duhawks moved to 4-7 in Iowa Conference play and two games behind Buena Vista and Simpson in the loss column for the sixth spot in the standings with the win over Luther.

Loras will be in Storm Lake on Wednesday night to take on Buena Vista in hopes of stringing together a sustained winning streak and stay on the road to take on Dubuque next Saturday. You can follow Wednesday's contest online at www.bvu.edu/athletics.
