Storm Warning Comes And Goes

The Loras College women's basketball team scored 40 first half points on league leading Simpson College on Wednesday night and took a slim one point lead into halftime, but the 10-0 visitors claimed victory, 73-68.

The Duhawks shot an impressive 54% (15-of-28) in the first half to take that one point lead into the locker room, led by Lindsey LaBadie's nine points and efficient 5-of-12 shooting from long distance. Six players also recorded multiple assists for the Duhawks, who scored 32 points off of 29 Simpson turnovers.

The see-saw game saw the Storm take a nine point lead with nine minutes remaining in the first half, but Loras chipped away as the intermission approached. The Duhawks claimed their first lead of the night when Katie Langmeier converted two free throws at the 5:08 mark. LaBadie and Brit Kent combined to score seven points in the closing moments of the first half and Kelsey James' three pointer with :17 remaining sent the Duhawks to the locker room with the lead.

Simpson' Amy Hamilton knocked down a pair of early three pointers (the only two of the half for the visitors) before the middle of the second half back-and-forth struggle began. LaBadie knocked down a three pointer with 6:24 remaining to extend Loras' lead to four - where it teetered until the three minute mark.

Kelly Rogowski scored a layup with 2:45 to go that put the Duhawks up one, but those would be the final points the home side would score. A blocked shot, a pair of missed free throws while nursing a 68-67 lead, and a missed long-range attempt in the closing seconds put Loras into the loss column. Simpson made four free throws and a short-range shot during the same stretch and took the lead for the last time with :36 to go. The Storm were 18-for-20 from the free throw line on the night, including 8-of-8 in the second half.

The win kept the Storm atop the IIAC at 10-0 and pushed the Duhawks to 5-5. Loras hosts Luther College (5-14, 1-9) on Saturday afternoon in the AWC. Tipoff is 2:00 PM.
