Duhawks earn first IIAC dual victory at Simpson

The Loras College wrestling team competed in their second Iowa Conference dual Wednesday night at Simpson and came out with their first league victory with by the final score of 24-19.

Freshman Jake Lancaster at 133 pounds defeated Jordan Howell 17-5 to receive a major decision for the Duhawks. At 157 pounds, Senior Erik Hanson improved his personal record to 16-1 on the season after a major decision over Cory Stratton, 16-4. Loras earned their third major decision on the night thanks to Freshman Stephan Birt after his 11-1 victory over Taylor Witzel.

Additional team points came from forfeits at the 125 and 285 weight classes, where Andrew Hoerth and Jeremy Klein received victories. Chris Reed, Mitch Gansen, and Tiegen Podliska all ended up on the wrong side of their matches but all kept them very competitive, losing by three, four, and one point respectively.

The Duhawks are now 7-7 in duals this season and 1-1 in the very competitive Iowa Conference. Loras returns to the mat Friday night at home in a dual against Coe College and also on Saturday for the "Flash" Flanagan Open. The Duhawks will also hold half of the Iowa Conference duals on January 29 in the Graber Sports Center.
