Hanson wins 157# bracket at Matman Invitational

Final Brackets

Loras College senior Erik Hanson helped the wrestling team to a fourth place team finish with 69 team points by winning the 157# bracket at Cornell College's Matman Invitational.

Hanson, the top seed at the tournament, won his first bout by pinning Elliot Carlson of Cornell in the first period. He followed with four straight decisions over Jon Priess of Augsburg (8-2), RJ Dilcher of UW-LaCrosse (8-1), Jason Taylor-Ohmes of Coe (10-4), and Ryan Warczynski of Dubuque (9-3) in the finals.

Pat Pfantz, the #5 seed at 125 pounds, finished in third place. Pfantz won two decisions to start the day, 7-5 and 7-1 before losing a close battle with #1 seed Jimmy Gotto of Coe, 5-3. Pfantz went on to win the third place match 6-5 in sudden victory overtime over #3 seed Mack Drees of UW-Platteville.

Additional team points came from fifth place finished by Joe Wood at 149 pounds and Mitch Gansen at 165 pounds. Unseeded Drew Salzman lost his opening round bout with the #3 seed and went on to win three straight matches, including two by pins, to earn a spot in the fifth place match at 141 points.

The Duhawks, who are 6-7 in duals this season, are on the road on Wednesday for an Iowa Conference dual against Simpson College (2-8, 0-3). Loras then turns around and hosts Coe College on Friday night and the "Flash" Flanagan Open on Saturday. The Duhawks will also host half of the Iowa Conference duals on January 29 in the Graber Sports Center.
