Turnovers plague Duhawks' home opener
Mon, Sep. 14, 2009 - [Football]

The Loras College football team fell to 0-2 on Saturday with a 42-7 loss in the Rock Bowl to the Millikin University Big Blue. Another slow start by Loras and two turnovers inside the Millikin five yard line gave the Big Blue all they needed behind transfer quarterback Luke Hockaday.

Loras committed only two penalties to Millikin's 11 and ran only two fewer plays than the Big Blue, but the visitors posted 330 yards of total offense to Loras' 149. The Duhawks handed the ball over twice on key plays while on the move in their opponents' territory. A botched snap over the head of Gavin Kaiser and a Chris Swift fumble slammed the door on two quality scoring chances.

Vaughn Gesing was 14-for-28 with three picks and was sacked four times. Beau Evans netted 24 yards on the ground for Loras. Walt Labuz caught a team-high five passes for 58 yards. Nick Lloyd had two returns of over 40 yards to help with field position. Gavin Kaiser scored Loras' lone touchdown after Lloyd's long punt return. It was Kaiser's third of the season.

For the second week in a row, the turnovers on offense have led to early leads by the non-conference opponents. Loras has played both Monmouth and Millikin even on the scoreboard in the second half of both games.

The Duhawks go back to the drawing board for this weekend's Iowa Conference opener with Simpson College in the Rock Bowl. The Storm are 1-1 so far in 2009. Kickoff is at 1:00 PM and can be heard locally on AM 1490 WDBQ and fans can follow live on the Loras website by clicking on the "Loras Live" tab on duhawks.com. At halftime of the game, Loras College will introduce the six newest members of the Loras College Varsity Athletics Hall of Fame.
