Loras closes 2010 with win over Beloit

The Duhawks turned up the defense, crashed the offensive glass, and took to the free throw line in the AWC for the second time in a week.

Loras defeated Beloit on New Year's Eve afternoon in the AWC, 77-69.

Guard Niki Rivera scored 16 points, including 8-of-8 from the free throw line and added two assists and four rebounds. Katie Langmeier came off the bench to score seven points on 3-of-7 shooting and pulled down a team high 11 rebounds - including five on the offensive end. She chipped in with an assist and a steal.

Loras went 37-of-49 from the free throw line, had 16 steals (five from Lindsey LaBadie and four from Alex Hudson), and added 18 offensive rebounds in their win. The Duhawks were +13 in points off turnovers and +11 in bench points.

The home team led by as many as 20 points with five and a half minutes to play when the Buccaneers began to cut into the lead. The visitors made 16 second half shots, but the Duhawks held the lead with 30 of their 37 free throws while making seven field goals of their own.

The win moved the Duhawks to .500 at 6-6.

Loras will host Buena Vista (5-7, 1-2) in their first game of 2011 as the Iowa Conference schedule picks back up. Tipoff is 6:00 PM on Wednesday night in the AWC. Loras has won four straight home games, and four of five overall this season.
