Duhawks nearly take down #9 Carthage
Tue, Nov. 30, 2010 - [Women's Basketball]

The Loras College women's basketball team fell behind by one point after a late free throw and couldn't convert on the ensuing possession in the final five seconds and lost on the road to #9 Carthage College, 58-57.

Brittany Kent led Loras with 12 points and Melissa Herrmann added eight to go with her six blocks and six rebounds to pace the Duhawks. Kent and Lindsey LaBadie (nine points) each went 4-of-10 from the field as the Duhawks shot a steady 41% from the floor.

On the other end of the floor, Loras held the Lady Reds to just 33% shooting and limited the home team to just two players in double figures. The Lady Reds were just 3-of-14 from long distance and scored 19 of their points from the free throw line. Carthage did force the Duhawks into 25 turnovers and earned 10 steals from Diana Jacklin and Heather Gilmore. They turned it over 22 times.

The Duhawks were down by 10 at the half and trailed by as many at 13 early in the second half before erasing the deficit, holding Carthage without a field goal over the final four minutes. Loras, however, didn't score beyond Kent's free throws with 1:41 to go. The only point scored over the final 100 seconds came from a Jacklin free throw to break the 57-57 tie. Lindsey LaBadie's shot with just seconds to go didn't go down and kept the Duhawks from the win column.

Loras takes to the floor this Wednesday night when they open IIAC play against the Central College Dutch at 6 PM. The game can be seen online via the Game Central tab at duhawks.com.
