The Loras College women's soccer team won their second game in a row and first in the friendly confines of the Rock Bowl on Monday evening, 2-1, over #21 Carleton College. The Duhawks needed 87 minutes to find the net then first time and overtime to claim victory, with the winning goal coming just 87 seconds into the extra session.
A perfect day for soccer and a number of shots on goal seemed like they were going to be the only highlights of the day until sophomore Kate Young took a Jessica Kern pass right at the heart of the Knights' 18-yard box and ripped a shot that glanced off the bottom of the crossbar and tied the game in the 87th minute.
Neither team converted in the closing moments of regulation and the Duhawks happily headed to overtime on their home field after earning the momentum late.
On the first shot of the overtime, 87 seconds into the frame, Kern again found a goal scorer. This time, it was senior midfielder Samantha Messacar who did the damage. From her wide position, Messacar sent a high ball into the six yard box that went over the head of Carleton goalkeeper Kate Trenerry for the game-winning goal. The win was Loras' second in three days and upped the team's record to 2-1-1 heading into Saturday's game against the University of St. Thomas in Platteville, Wisconsin. The Duhawks and Tommies kickoff at 11:30 am. The last time the two teams met was also in the state of Wisconsin. On November 15 of last year, Loras and St. Thomas met in the opening round of the NCAA III Tournament. The Duhawks advanced on PKs after the teams played to a 1-1 draw. Holly Wilson scored Loras' goal in the 75th minute.
