Otterbein wins PK shootout, 3-1
Tue, Nov. 23, 2010 - [Women's Soccer]

After 110 minutes of scoreless soccer, the Duhawks and Cardinals broke a stalemate from the penalty spot in the sectional round of the 2010 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships.

The Duhawks held a 6-5 shot advantage at the end of regulation and added two more during the first overtime to try and push past the #3 Otterbein Cardinals, but weren't able to solve the visitors defense.

Both overtimes and the final 2:30 of regulation were played without Otterbein leading goal scorer Lindsey Rudibaugh - who was issued two yellow cards over the final six minutes of regulation. Jessica Kern took the shot that required a save by Tara Carter to keep the game scoreless late in the first overtime.

The penalty kick shootout started well for the Duhawks, with Jessica Kern converting for the Duhawks and Loras goalkeeper Katie Chambers stopping Jenny Knox's attempt. Kern's was the only goal the Duhawks would score, however. Tonya Lohmeyer followed with a shot off target before Kate Young and Jayne Eslinger had their shots saved by Carter. Chambers would get her hand on one more shot, but did not keep any of the shots by Laura Vasbinder, Tara Smith, or Alyssa Hale out of the net.

The draw was Loras' first of the year and closed the season for the Duhawks at 22-1-1. Twenty-two wins is the most in program history and the "Sweet 16" appearance matches the deepest run into the NCAA Tournament in program history. One loss is the fewest by any Duhawks team. Loras won both the IIAC regular season and tournament titles for the first time since 2005.

Kelly Murphy, Lisa Smith, and Hillary Reed each wrapped up their careers with the Duhawks as members of the most successful team in program history.
