The Loras College women's soccer team advanced to the sectionals of the 2010 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships after a 2-0 win in the Rock Bowl over Wartburg College on Saturday night.
The Duhawks completed a three-game season sweep of Knights with the 2-0 win. Previously, the Duhawks won 3-1 during the regular season and 1-0 in the IIAC Tournament Championship game. Saturday's game guaranteed at least one Iowa Conference team would advance to the Sweet 16 - and the Duhawks earned the win with one goal in each half.
Loras goalkeeper Katie Chambers scored her third goal in two games and fourth goal of the season in the 29th minute to put the Duhawks in front. A target for Loras' attack during corner kicks and free kicks deep in opponents' territory all year, Chambers headed Jessica Kern's corner kick past Monica Noti for what would hold up as her third game-winning goal of the year and second in as many games.
The Duhawks extended the lead in the 73rd minute when Kate Young returned to the game put a long distance shot over the top of Noti. Young's team high 12th goal of the year was just moments after returning to the game after a brief break from the action.
Loras outshot the Knights, who won Friday via the penalty kick shootout, 9-4 overall. Chambers made one save in earning the shutout. The win increased Loras' team record for most wins in a season to 22.
"We've been playing consistently in all parts of the field for a while now, and having Katie (Chambers) being so effective at both ends (of the field) this time of year helps us that much more," head coach Dan Rothert said.
"We'll be focused and ready to go next weekend."
The Duhawks draw 20-0-1 Otterbein next weekend, with the date, site, and game time yet to be determined.
