The Loras College men's soccer team is making their sixth straight appearance in the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championships after winning the IIAC Tournament on Saturday night, 2-1 over Wartburg College.

Each team entered the tournament after going 7-1 in the regular season and the Knights winning on their home field on October 8.

Wartburg opened the scoring in the 21st minute after a long run by Brandon Cook. Loras' corner kick was nearly controlled to a dangerous touch in front of Knights goalkeeper Brandon Busbee, but the clearance by Corey Troast took off all pressure, and, at the same time, started the Wartburg attack. Cook was able to turn on the Duhawk defender near midfield and sprint towards Dan Wickman in the Loras goal without any disruption. Cook finished his breakaway effort and gave the Knights the lead.

Each side put two shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes, but Cook's was the difference at the intermission.

Once the second half started the Duhawks quickly grabbed the momentum, keeping things away from Wickman and in front of Busbee.

Justin McCord evened the game in the 49th minute when a combination between Tom Strumpf and Andy Filipiak led to a glancing header under the crossbar.

Five minutes later a Loras corner kick by Filipiak found McCord. Typically setup in front of the goalkeeper, McCord directed the ball near the post and over the line for what held up as the game-winner.

Busbee finished with five saves and Wickman finished with three. The Duhawks took a total of 22 shots, seven of which were on frame. Wartburg took 8, four of which were on goal.

The Duhawks, who came from behind to win both the semifinal and final games of the tournament, await their first round opponent in the 2010 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championships. Last year, Loras advanced to the Sweet 16 round of the single elimination tournament.
