The Loras College volleyball team earned their first Iowa Conference win in defense of their 2008 championship on Tuesday night at the Regents Center in Decorah, Iowa over Luther College.
The Duhawks set the tone early, hitting a match-high .324 in the first set in earning the 25-23 victory. Junior Julianne Lord put down a team high 12 kills to lead the Loras attack. She was followed closely by senior Natalie Roling and freshman Regan Riley, who each tallied 10 kills.
Brittney Westermeyer, who led the team in kills over the weekend, trailed closely behind with nine kills. Five Duhawks have at least 26 kills through five matches.
Julie Rogers was responsible for the setting, as she was all weekend at the Sugar Loaf Tournament in Winona, Minnesota. Rogers assisted on 40 points and also scored three of her own.
Loras' schedule continues this weekend when they travel to Wartburg for the Knights' tournament. The Duhawks will have early season rematches with UW-LaCrosse and St. Mary's in Waverly.
The next Iowa Conference match will be the team's home opener. Loras will play Simpson College at 7:30 PM on September 15 in the AWC. The Storm and the Duhawks played in the 2008 regular sesaon finale to determine the IIAC regular season champ, and met again in the IIAC Tournament Championship. The Duhawks won both contests. Simpson is receiving votes in the latest AVCA Coaches Association Poll.
