The Loras College men's soccer team claimed their sixth Iowa Conference Championship on Saturday afternoon after defeating the Buena Vista University Beavers 4-0 in the Rock Bowl.
The Duhawks scored three times in the opening 20 minutes to take control of the regular season finale. Senior Zach Bruns (pictured) scored his first goal of the season in the 10th minute when he took a Miguel Bonilla pass into the right side of the penalty box and drilled a low shot past Dustin Dobbels for the opening goal of the game.
Just five minutes later the Duhawks returned to the Buena Vista penalty area when Justin McCord sent Chris Comstock towards the end line. Comstock was stuck momentarily with the ball underneath him but pushed it over the goal line to make it 2-0. Miguel Bonilla extended the lead to 3-0 after a long distance shot proved too difficult for Dobbels to read and handle. Brad Joiner added the game's final goal in the 78th minute when he worked himself from the top of the box into a position to slip the ball past the Beavers' goalkeeper.
Dan Wickman needed to make just two saves to preserve Loras' shutout and sixth straight win. Each of those wins has also come by way of the shutout, and includes the Duhawks outscoring their opponents 16-0.
By winning their seventh Iowa Conference game of the year the Duhawks earned a share of the IIAC title. Wartburg College's overall goal differential in league play earned them the #1 seed in next weekend's Iowa Conference Tournament over Loras and Dubuque. Once the top seed was determined, Loras and Dubuque, tied at 7-1, had their seeds determined by their head to matchup, which the Duhawks won 2-0 on October 20 at Oyen Field over the Spartans.
The IIAC Tournament this season is held at the IIAC women's champion - which in 2010 is Loras College. The Rock Bowl will host semifinal and final matches on both the men's and women's side beginning on Friday, and concluding with the championships on Saturday night. Opening round games will be played in the middle of this week to determine the semifinalists. A full schedule of next weekend's games will be available at duhawks.com and iowaconference.com at that time.
The regular season finale also included the Senior Day recognition of nine young men. In addition to Zach Bruns, Loras College honored the careers of Justin McCord, Dan Wickman, Donald St. George, Robert Murphy, Matt Lamale, Miguel Bonilla, Tom Jennings, and Tom Strumpf. This class has concluded each of their first three seasons with the Duhawks with a final national ranking in the top 10 and accounted for 18 goals this season.
