The Loras College men's soccer team handed the University of Dubuque their first Iowa Conference loss of the season on Wednesday night, defeating the home team 2-0 on their way to improving to 5-1 in the IIAC themselves.

Eight of the eleven total shots the Duhawks took on Wednesday came from starters, including four from freshman Pat Langan, but none were converted into goals. One of Langan's, a booming free kick from 25 yards, was blocked wide in the second half.

The other three shots came from Louie Oswald, Sean Lewis, and Camilo Garces. Two of those three went in - earning the Duhawks a key victory in the Iowa Conference race.

The first goal of Lewis' career came in the 38th minute. Andy Filipiak pressured a Dubuque defender and forced a turnover, leading to a short rush toward the end line with the ball. Filipiak quickly gave up the ball to Lewis, who was rushing toward the front of the Dubuque goal. The sophomore from Evanston, Illinois took care of the rest with his one touch past the Spartans goalkeeper.

Garces scored the second goal of his career following more timely pressure in front of the Dubuque goal. Alejandro Cosmopolis worked the ball away from a Spartans defender and fed a pass to Garces, who separated himself from his defender to take a short-range shot past Dubuque goalkeeper Nick Kasper.

Loras improved to 10-6 overall and 5-1 in the IIAC with two league games left to play. The Duhawks have Saturday matches with Simpson and Buena Vista sandwiched around a non-conference Sunday game against Dominican. Kickoff this Saturday with Simpson is 1:00 PM in the Rock Bowl.
