Duhawks dominate Dubuque
Thu, Oct. 7, 2010 - [Women's Volleyball]

On a night when the Loras College, University of Dubuque, and local volleyball fans and teams turned their off-court attention to "Thinking Pink", the Duhawks turned their on-court attention to remaining unbeaten in Iowa Conference play.

The Duhawks swept the Dubuque Spartans 3-0 in front of over 300 fans who turned out to raise money for two local charities - the Maria House and the Breast of Friends program. Loras won the three sets 25-13, 25-15, and 25-18 to move to 5-0 in Iowa Conference competition.

Kate Russell, the Iowa Conference's reigning Female Athlete of the Week, led the Duhawks with 11 kills, 12 digs, four block assists, and two aces. Kenzie Goedken was next best for the Duhawks offense, posting eight kills. Setter Julie Rogers pitched in with 23 assists.

Loras' defense remained steady throughout, keeping 58 Spartans' attempts up with digs. Libero Morgan Murphy (11 digs), Regan Riley (10 digs), and Julianne Lord (9 digs) each played major roles in keeping Dubuque's offense under control.

Loras is 3-0 at home in Iowa Conference play, with the Cornell Rams coming to the AWC on November 2 to close out the regular season and league slate. Loras' two remaining IIAC road contests are Central (3-1 in IIAC) and Coe (2-2 in IIAC).

This weekend the 16-5 Duhawks will be in Platteville, Wisconsin to take on UW-LaCrosse, Elmhurst College, UW-Stevens Point, and host UW-Platteville at the Pioneers' tournament. The Duhawks play at 4:00 and 8:00 PM on Friday and return Saturday to play at 10:00 AM and noon.

The 3rd Annual "Think Pink" event included booths and tables from health care providers and a raffle that included over three dozen "Pink" prizes. Thanks to the fans in attendance at the match on Wednesday night, this year's efforts generated over $600 for the Maria House and Breast of Friends. Thanks one and all for doing your part and "Thinking Pink".
