The Loras College women's soccer team opened the 2010 season with a convincing 2-0 win over St. Ambrose University in the Rock Bowl on Wednesday night.

Junior forward Kate Young netted one goal in each half to give the Duhawks the offense they needed. In the sixth minute, Young finished off what Ali Schmitt started up the left side. Schmitt's cross was sent to the back post, where Tonya Lohmeyer quickly played another pass to the doorstep where Young provided the finishing touch to an all-around attack. The Duhawks took seven other first half shots but were only able to net the early one by Young.

In the 53rd minute, Young was on the receiving end of another cross - this time by Maddie Tennant - whose serve from the right side bounced into the path of Young's run to the middle of the box. Young took care of the rest and extended the lead to 2-0.

The defense limited St. Ambrose to just two shots on goal and Katie Chambers earned her first shutout of 2010 as a result.

The Duhawks head to Minnesota to play Macalester on Sunday of the upcoming Labor Day weekend before returning to the Rock Bowl for a midweek tilt against UW-Whitewater next week.
