The Loras College softball team split their Tuesday doubleheader with the Coe College Kohawks, dropping Game 1, 4-0, and taking Game 2, 1-0.
Game 1
Coe starter Ashlee Simon kept the Duhawk offense in check with her complete game one-hitter. Kelli Klein singled in the fifth inning to break up the no hit bid. Simon, the reigning IIAC Pitcher of the Week, ended up striking out 13 Duhawks en route to the win.
The game was 1-0 early in favor of the visitors after an early run against Loras starter Michelle Sabatini, but a three run top of the seventh inning put the game out of reach based on the day Simon was having.
Game 2
The Duhawks emerged victorious in Game 2 thanks to some improvements in the batter's box and additional looks at Simon's pitching. Loras totaled a run on four hits, scoring the game's lone run in the bottom of the fifth inning.
The home team threatened in both the third and fourth innings, getting the leadoff hitter on base but leaving a total of three runners on the base paths in those two innings.
Finally in the fifth, a Katelyn Jones double and Emily Randecker walk set the stage for the game's first run. After a passed ball, Kelsey Techlin dropped a ball in front of home plate that froze the runners and had the bases loaded for Michelle Bahl. With two outs in the inning and Bahl ahead in the count Simon threw a wild pitch that Jones was ready for, turning her secondary lead off of the third base bag into the game's first run as she hustled home for the game's first and only run.
Kellie Klein pitched out of trouble in the sixth and went 1-2-3 in the seventh to seal the win for the Duhawks, their fourth of 2010 in the IIAC. The Kohawks scattered six hits against Klein over the seven innings, but were shutout for the second time in their last four games.
In between games, the Duhawks took a few minutes to honor the senior trio of Emily Randecker, Crystal Strauch, and Michelle Bahl. Each were honored and congratulated for their time in a Duhawk uniform. The young ladies combined for 164 hits and 124 runs in their careers.
Loras hosts Wartburg on Thursday, April 29 in their makeup games which were originally scheduled for last weekend. First pitch will again be at 3:00 PM.
