Loras sweeps Spartans for first IIAC wins of 2010
Sun, Apr. 11, 2010 - [Softball]

Game 1

Loras set the tone early with a single run in the bottom of the first when Michelle Bahl scored an unearned run on double by Tracy Sullivan. Another run crossed the plate when leadoff hitter Shelby Perkins reached on a fielder's choice and was knocked home by another fielder's choice, this time off the bat of Bahl.

The Spartans quickly answered with a run of their own but Sullivan was able to break the tension of the 2-1 game in the bottom of the sixth innings. After Bahl singled to start the half inning, the Duhawks backstop homered to straightaway center field to make it 4-1. Cassandra Maniatis added an RBI double to close the scoring.

Kellie Klein earned the win on the mound, going the distance. She allowed just four hits and one unearned run, walking two and striking out three.

Game 2

The Spartans opened the scoring in a big way with all five of their runs on four hits in the top of the first inning of Game 2.

After two hits, an error, a sacrifice fly, and a hit by pitch, and one run already across in the bottom half of the same inning, freshmen shortstop Niki Rivera stepped up to try and cut into the 5-1 Dubuque lead. Instead of just cutting into the visitors lead, Rivera erased it with a grand slam to deep left field. Rivera's grand slam was the first homerun of her college career.

The game remained tied at 5-5 until the bottom of the fifth. The Duhawks made the Spartans pay for a costly error by scoring three unearned runs on RBI hits by Bahl and Sullivan. The fifth inning trifecta held up as Kellie Klein didn't allow Dubuque a base runner over the final two innings.

The sweep was enough to push Loras to .500 in the Iowa Conference. The Duhawks will be in Storm Lake on Tuesday to play Buena Vista.
