Tue, Mar. 23, 2010 - [Softball]

The Loras College softball team swept the double header in Clinton, Iowa over Ashford University yesterday, 6-2 and 7-3. Junior Michelle Sabatini earned one win on the mound and Kellie Klein the other as the Duhawks moved to 2-0 to start the 2010 season. The Duhawks finished the day with 20 hits, 13 RBI and 13 runs to start the season. Senior Michelle Bahl was the big hitter of the night with three homeruns, three singles, and six RBI.

Game 1
Loras scored the first run of the game in the first inning off a sacrifice fly to center field off the bat of Sara Palczynski to send freshman Beth Miller in to home plate. In the bottom of the second, Ashford tied the game up with a double from Schroeder to knock in Rosenow.

In the top of the fourth, Bahl hit her first homerun of the day to put the Duhawks up 2-1. Loras scored four more runs to seal the win in the top of the fifth inning after doubles by Miller and Palcyznski that brought home Crystal Strauch, Bahl, Miller, and Kelsey Techlin. Ashford earned one more run in the bottom of the fifth. The remainder of the game was scoreless and the Duhawks held on to win 6-2. Strauch had two hits in game one to join Bahl in the multi-hit category.

Game 2
The Duhawks started off hot right away earning three runs in the top of the first inning of Game 2 with another homerun from Bahl that sent freshman Shelby Perkins home. Palcyznski doubled into right center and Miller added an RBI single. Bahl homered for the final time of the series, and tied her season total from 2009, when she hit her third homerun in the top of the third inning. Ashford put their first run on the board in the bottom of the fourth after Roth was caught stealing and Harmon- who was on third base- hustled home.

Loras added another run in the top of the 5th after Kellie Klein hit an RBI single to send Bahl home from second. In the top of the seventh, the Duhawks score two final unearned runs as Niki Rivera hit a 2 RBI single. Ashford added a couple of late runs in the bottom of the seventh, but not nearly enough to catch up to Loras' seven.

The wins were the first and second wins of first year head coach Ashley Rogers' career. The Duhawks will play Clarke College in a doubleheader beginning at 5:00 PM tomorrow at Veteran's Memorial Park in Dubuque.
